In 1996, legendary Islamorada backcountry guide Hal Chittum founded a new skiff company, with designs on building the next generation of high-tech shallow water fishing machines. At the time, no flats skiff on the market offered the stealth, draft or dry ride that top guides and anglers were searching for. That company, Hell's Bay Boatworks, went a long way towards raising the bar. Yet there still remained a rising tide of discontent among anglers and guides. Three years ago, Capt. Hal Chittum and Capt. George Sawley sat down with a blank sheet of paper and one goal – to resolve, once and for all, the shortcomings that were never fixed at Hell's Bay – among them, the invisible hull pressure wave that spooks fish. Thirty-six months and more than 65 prototype changes later, Chittum Skiffs proudly presents the revolutionary Islamorada 18.
